Your Subaru has a huge range of specialized systems to make your driving experience safer, easier, and more pleasurable than ever before. All these systems are generally referred to by an alphabet soup of letters that can be difficult to understand. As your Los Angeles Subaru dealer, we want to tell you more about some of these car terms and how these systems work.

ABS

This stands for Anti-lock Braking System. If you’re driving over very wet terrain, particularly at speed, your car can hydroplane. If this happens, your tires lose contact with the surface due to water underneath them. Older cars could skid, and their wheels would automatically lock, making it difficult to get out of the skid. The ABS prevents your wheels from locking so you don’t lose control over your car.

Forward Collision Warning

Safety is an essential part of every Subaru, and this system can prevent an accident. Your car sends out radar pulses in front of it. These pulses measure the distance between your front bumper and any object ahead of you. If the object gets too close, this warning system prefills your brakes with brake fluid and sounds an audible alarm so you can take action.

Lane Departure Warning

This is another vital safety system, and it includes lane-keeping assist. If you’re driving and accidentally stray out of a lane, this system will make small corrections using your power steering to bring your vehicle back into the lane again.

Power Steering

A car is heavy, and this can make it difficult to steer. Older vehicles required you to use more energy and effort to simply turn the wheel. Your Subaru has power steering to make life much easier. A power steering pump pressurizes fluid in the system, which creates a hydraulic force to assist the rack and pinion steering and transmission gears to move smoother and easier.

HUD

HUD stands for Heads-Up Display, which is a computerized system that projects important information on the windshield in front of you. You can select up to five different types of information to display, including your speed, turn-by-turn navigation, speed limit, and current gear. You can see all the information you need without having to take your eyes off the road ahead.

360-Degree Camera

This system uses cameras positioned at the front, sides, and rear of your Subaru to create a 360-degree bird’s-eye view of the space around your car. It allows you to see vehicles, pedestrians, and other objects that are in blind spots that you might otherwise not notice.
