how often should you replace your brake pads in los angeles, ca

Brake pads are an essential part of your car’s braking system. They generate friction against the wheel rotors, and this friction slows and stops your wheels. Pads gradually wear out as they work, and they need regular replacement. As your Subaru dealer near Los Angeles, CA, we’d like you to know how often you should have your pads changed.

How Long Do Pads Last?

On average, pads need to be changed every 25,000 to 70,000 miles depending on the type of pads you have. Your car service manual gives the exact replacement time for your Subaru model. The replacement time can be affected by both driving conditions and your driving style. If you regularly drive in the city or have to frequently ride your brakes, this generates more wear on the pads.

Each pad has a 1/2″ thick material covering that generates friction. The material on a pad slowly wears down due to the friction it generates. As the material covering becomes thinner, braking will take longer, as worn pads can’t generate friction as quickly as they previously did.

How Do the Pads Work?

The pads fit into the brake calipers, and a brake caliper is positioned above each of your wheels. When you mash the brakes, brake fluid is forced into the hoses under pressure. The pressurized brake fluid forces the pins out of the calipers, and the calipers close on either side of each rotor.

The pads generate friction against the smooth rotor surfaces. The friction they generate stops the movement of the rotors, and your wheels come to a halt.

Signs You Need Replacement Pads

These are two of the signs that your pads have worn down significantly and need to be replaced ASAP:

Screeching Sound When You Brake

Your Subaru brakes should operate silently and efficiently. If you hear a screeching sound each time you brake, this is usually a sign that one or more pads have worn down. The noise is generated by a metal spike encased by the friction material. When a pad has worn down and needs to be replaced, the spike will scratch against the wheel rotor each time you brake.

Grinding Sound When You Brake

A harsh grinding sound from the brakes is a warning that at least one pad has completely worn down. Without the friction material as a buffer, the metal surface of the pad will clamp against the wheel rotor. The metal-on-metal contact produces an unsettling grinding noise. If the worn pads aren’t replaced immediately, they can inflict serious damage on the rotors.
