Best Drives: 3 Great Day Trips to Take Near Covina, CA

Covina, CA and the nearby City of Industry, CA have an excellent location for day trips here in LA county, right on the edge of the famous San Gabriel Mountains that tower over the city. There are so many beautiful places you can go in just under an hour’s drive from here that it would be impossible to talk about all of them, but here we’ve chosen our favorite 3 places you can visit for a day!

1. Mt San Antonio

Also called Mount Baldy, the tallest mountain in Los Angeles is something all Angelenos see every day from the valley, but rarely up close! And if you’re here in Covina, you’re less than an hour’s drive from the trailhead at 901-993 Falls Road, so why not make a day trip out of it?

The hike up and down is about 12 miles round trip and can be a bit tough, so make sure to bring a lot of water, snacks, and comfortable hiking clothes. But the 10,000-foot-high view you’ll get of the nearby mountains, Central Valley, Los Angeles Basin, and Pacific Ocean will be well worth it. If you aren’t in the shape for a long hike, you can always take the lift up to near the summit.

2. Mountain High Resort

Los Angeles’s premier winter sports resort is also a quick day trip away from us in Covina, so we definitely recommend spending a winter’s day at Mountain High Resort over at 24510 CA-2. If you’re into skiing or snowboarding, you’d be excited to know that you can find some of the longest runs and best snow in California on this mountain, and a skiing season that runs all the way through April.

If skiing isn’t your thing, they offer more relaxed winter sports options like tubing and sledding that the whole family can enjoy during the winter, as well as exciting summer activities including archery, disc golf, and hiking.

3. Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area

If you want to see some classic Southwestern nature only an hour’s drive from Covina, head up to the Devil’s Punchbown Natural Area at 28000 Devils Punchbowl Road. Prepare to be awed by the canyons, rivers, cliffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas looking up to the San Gabriel Mountains.

With many miles of hiking trails to explore at all difficulty levels and natural wonders around every corner, you can easily spend a day (or even more) exploring this incredible park.
