The campgrounds within driving distance of Los Angeles and the City of Industry, CA are tranquil retreats where you can escape into nature away from the hubbub of city life. 1. Malibu Creek State Park Campground
The secluded Malibu Creek State Park Campground at 1925 Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas is just over 39 miles away and the ideal place to pitch your tent to explore the Santa Monica Mountains by hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing.
Follow Malibu Creek on the chaparral-covered slopes through the beautiful oak and sycamore woodlands down to the Malibu Lagoon for awe-inspiring views of the volcanic rock gorges, Las Virgenes Valley, and Malibu Canyon. After a day of exploring and birdwatching, head back to your campsite to relax around a campfire. The sites have picnic tables, fire rings, token-operated showers, and flush toilets nearby.
2. Crystal Lake Recreation Area
The Crystal Lake Recreation Area Campground, at the top of Highway 39 at mile marker 38.13 in Azusa, roughly 48 miles from the city, is tucked away in the dense Angeles National Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains at 5,539 feet above sea level. The peaceful campground on Crystal Lake, the only natural lake in the region, offers three cozy cabins and 36 spacious tent sites with picnic tables, fire rings, water spigots, and nearby vault toilets.
The Crystal Lake Cafe and Trading Post has everything you need, from firewood, outdoor gear, and hot meals to homemade brownies and banana-nut bread. Spend your days fishing in the lake and hiking down the steep 2.5-mile trail from the campground to Windy Gap to marvel at the spectacular views over the lake and the mountains.
3. Leo Carillo State Park Campground
Take advantage of the sunny California weather and head to Leo Carillo State Park Campground at 35000 East Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, just over 42 miles away. Enjoy sticking your toes in the warm sand, swimming in the ocean, surfing the waves, and exploring the tidepools, reefs, and caves.
The campground is right opposite the beach and has 130 campsites with electrical hookups to choose from, close to token-operated showers. There’s a beach store right in the middle of the campground if you forgot to pack something essential, and you can even bring your four-legged friend along to enjoy the experience with you.
