Trim Levels (Exterior)
With the new Onyx Edition trim, Subaru offers a lineup of nine trim levels in 2023: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT. The Base, Premium, and Wilderness trims feature 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and the remaining six trims come standard with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels.
A hands-free power rear gate is optional on the Premium trim and standard on the top seven trim levels. Revised exterior styling includes a larger front grille, revised headlamps, and a new front bumper, adding to a more robust and bolder curb appeal. Exterior cladding transforms the 2023 Outback from a station wagon style to a crossover SUV look. Subaru sets apart the Wilderness trim with a matte black hood decal and trim-specific bumpers.
Engine (Power)
The 2023 Outback features a standard four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque on the first five trims. If you choose one of the upper four trims, Subaru delivers a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that outputs 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Outback's standard four-cylinder engine can tow 2,700 pounds, while the turbocharged version can pull 3,500.
Performance
With 8.7 inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, the Subaru Outback navigates wintry weather, muddy roads, and light off-road driving with excellent versatility. Accurate steering and a dynamic suspension handle potholes, speed humps, and drainage ditches with an impressive balance of compliance, absorption, and control.
For 2023, Subaru delivers a smoother operation of the adaptive cruise control system and a transmission that shifts quickly and promptly to help you keep pace with traffic. The optional turbocharged engine provides plenty of power with ratings of 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. The standard Outback engine will earn 26 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway.
Interior
Aside from the base model, every Outback has dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and multiple USB ports. A heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are available to upper trim levels. Base Outbacks feature two stacked 7-inch touch screens, and all other trims feature an 11.6-inch touch screen. Built-in navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and wireless device charging are optional, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard.
Safety Features
Wide field-of-view cameras improve the Subaru Outback driver-assist features. Subaru holds safety in high regard and equips every 2023 Outback with adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane keep assist. Blind-spot monitoring, reverse automatic braking, and rear cross-traffic alert feature on higher trims.
